THE LITTLE MERMAID TO SURFACE AT NEW BRITAIN’S TRINITY-ON-MAIN
“The Little Mermaid” will come ashore at New Britain’s Trinity-On-Main on Saturday, June 13 when Children’s Dance Theater Connection, Inc. performs its version of the story of a girl who wanted the best of both worlds of land and sea.
CDTC’s production is based primarily on the Disney animated film version of Han Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale, but it also incorporates musical numbers from a variety of unlikely sources such as the Beatles’ “Octopus’ Garden” and the Caribbean hit, “Hot, Hot, Hot.”
Major roles in the production will be performed by CDTC’s members who range in ages from four to sixteen. They will be supported by students recruited from New Britain and Southington public schools. Approximately 70 young people in all will fill out the cast. As with every CDTC performance, there will be a segment for audience participation, during which children in the audience will be invited to dance in the octopus’ garden.
CDTC’s artistic director is Patricia Martin, who has been teaching dance and theater arts in the New Britain and Southington area for over 25 years. “This show is the culmination of a lot of hard work on the part of our performers and a lot of support from their parents,” she says. “We’re excited about sharing the fun of this show with children in the community. Actually I’m not sure who has more fun, the audience or the cast members.”
Trinity’s executive director, Anne Pilla, is looking forward to CDTC’s performance. “We’re always glad when CDTC comes to Trinity,” Pilla says. “Their shows are always exciting, just the kind of children’s entertainment we’re trying to establish at our venue.”
CDTC will present two shows of “The Little Mermaid,” one at 1:30 p.m. and the second at 4:00 p.m. Tickets for its show are set at a very reasonable $5 for children and $10 for adults. Persons interested in reserving tickets can call 860/827-9774.
Trinity-on-Main is located at 69 Main Street in downtown New Britain. Free parking for the performance is available across the street in the Chestnut Street Garage.
This performance has been made possible in part by funding from American Savings Foundation, The Greater New Britain Arts Alliance and CDTC.
CDTC is a non-profit children’s performing company that specializes in presenting participatory, outreach performances that benefit community service organizations.
